Le groupe réunit le bassiste/chanteur Tom Araya (ex-Quits), le batteur Dave Lombardo (ex-Sabotage) et les guitaristes Kerry King (ex-Quits) et Jeff Hanneman. Le combo choisit de s’appeler Slayer en hommage au film “Dragonslayer” sorti la même année. Avec Metallica, Anthrax et Megadeth, Slayer fait parti de ce que les médias nomment « The Big Four » en raison de leur position de figure de proue du mouvement extrême phare de l’époque : le Thrash. Aux côtés de Venom, Slayer est également le groupe qui contribua très largement à répandre l’idée « malsaine » du Metal. Slayer joue en effet beaucoup sur la provocation avec ses paroles sataniques, son penchant pour la seconde guerre mondiale qui fut assimilé par certains à du nazisme alors que Jeff Hanneman s’est toujours défendu d’être un passionné de cet événement, son père ayant participé à cette guerre. Si le groupe dégageait une image plutôt subversive, il impressionnait tout autant de par sa musique, Slayer était en effet plus rapide et violent que tout ce qui se faisait à l’époque, au début des années 1980 alors marquées par le Glam Rock et le Hair Metal. Slayer est mis sur le devant de la scène dès la publication du maxi Hauting the chapel, contenant le cultissime Aggressive Perfector déjà présente sur la compilation Metal Massacre IV. La voix d’Araya y est perçue comme une agression pour beaucoup de gens et les rythmiques mêlant la vitesse du Punk et la technique du Metal défrayent les chroniques, même si Venom et Metallica l’avaient peu avant, aucun n’atteignait la vélocité et l’agressivité de Slayer. Brian Slagel remarqua vite le quatuor et ne tarda pas à le faire signer. Show No Mercy sort en 1983, mais passe un peu inaperçu, tout comme Hell Awaits deux années plus tard. Malgrés des titres provocateurs (The antichrist, hell awaits) et des morceaux très interessants (Black Magic). Il fallut attendre 1986 et la sortie du phénoménal Reign in Blood pour que la réputation du groupe décolle réellement. Avec ce concept album de génie de 30 minutes à peine, Slayer influença toute une génération de musiciens, en particulier dans le courant Death Metal, Grind-core ou encore Black Metal. Une demi-heure d’agrression non-stop. Une demi-heure de stigmatisation malsaine, de violence pure. Reign In Blood est un monument du Metal est reste de nos jours encore dérangeant. La sortie de South of Heaven en 1988 marque un tournant dans la carrière du groupe qui délaisse le satanisme, ralentit quelque peu le tempo et apporte des lignes de chant plus mélodiques (south of heavn, spill the blood), au grand désappointement de leurs fans les plus extrémes. Cet album recèle néanmoins le quasi-parfait morceau « Silent Scream », a la ligne batterie irréelle… Deux ans après eut lieu une tournée d’anthologie aux côtés de Megadeth (qui venait de sortir Rust in Peace) et d’Anthrax, soit trois des quatre plus gros groupes de Thrash. Peu après cette tournée, Slayer sort Seasons of the Abyss en continuant sur la lancée de South of Heaven mais ce disque est nettement mieux conçu que son prédécesseur, à tel point qu’il divisa les fans sur le fait que Reign in Blood soit leur meilleur album ou pas. Après un double album live 1991 (un monument du metal, là encore, A decade of aggression, pour feter les dix ans de Salyer), Dave Lombardo quitte Slayer en 1992 et se voit remplacer par l’ancien Forbidden Paul Bostaph avec qui le groupe enregistre Divine Intervention en 1994 et l’album de reprises Punk Undisputed Attitude en 1996 en réponse au minable The Spagettis incident ? des GnR. 1996 fut également marquée par la mise en procès de Slayer en raison de l’enlèvement, de la torture, du viol, puis du meurtre d’une adolescente de 15 ans par trois membres du groupe de Black Metal Hatred. Le rapport avec Slayer ? Les meurtriers auraient été influencés par la chanson Necrophiliac. Slayer n’a été mis hors de cause dans cette affaire qu’en 2001. Jouez du Metal et vous êtes un psychopathe. C’est connu… Retour en 1996, Bostaph abandonne le groupe en pleine tournée pour d’occuper de sa carrière Jazz. Il est remplacé par l’ancien batteur de Testament John Dette, mais celui-ci retourna dans son ancien groupe dès 1998, laissant de nouveau la place de batteur vacante, reprise par Paul Bostaph. La même année sort Diabolus in Musica, album controversé car plus calme, enfin pour du Slayer. God Hates Us All « corrige » le tir en 2001 en revenant un peu plus vers ses bases, même s’il s’en démarque profondément au niveau du son. L’année suivante marque le second départ de Paul Bostaph, pour Systematic, et le retour de Dave Lombardo derrière les fûts. Après une tournée remarquée en 2004 aux côtés de Machine Head, Slipknot et Mastodon, le groupe fit une pause avant de retourner en studio pour enregistrer son dixième album studio (Christ illusion) dont la sortie est prévue pour Aout 2006, après le phénoménal dvd Still Reigning.
